What we've been up to...
Our Halloween celebration was a wonderful time for the children.
Thank you to all who had a role in planning and running it. Check out the photos page for more pictures.
Children worked with subtraction
*with regrouping in the ones, tens, and hundreds
We began an introduction to bar modeling - a visual tool for solving math problems
* Oral and Written Language Editing: Children worked on editing sentences that had grammatical errors both orally and written.
*Book Clubs - book clubs worked together in their book as a group and to read and practice good reading strategies such as making predictions, visualizing, and summarizing. We also discussed vocabulary and completed some comprehension activities.
*As part of our community study, we discussed the FA helpers in our school and how they impact our school community. Each child chose an FA helper - someone other than teachers that works at the school. They chose to focus on 6 questions, conducted their interview and followed the same process that we practiced with peer interviews. The children were also able to have a quick tour of the workspace for the person they interviewed. This week, they converted the questions and answers into complete sentences and then added a topic sentence and a closing sentence to write a paragraph. We discussed the format of a paragraph with a topic sentence, body, and closing sentence.
Spelling: This week children reviewed previous spelling lists. We reviewed rules such as doubling the consonant before adding ing or ed in a cvc word. Children worked with partners to study the words.
Thank you to Mrs. Barker who came to read to our class.
Practicing Good Character and our FA Bees-
The month of November is dedicated to the Friends Academy Bee - Be Honest.
We read several books about honesty. On Friday, both classes joined together to read part of Honesty Counts and followed it with an activity in which the children illustrated or wrote about an opportunity for them to be honest. They could choose a realistic situation, a situation in which they were honest, or a situation in which they weren't honest, but explained how they would be honest next time. Their ideas were genuine and well thought out.
