Our first few weeks...
We have spent some time building a safe learning community and environment together.
Our activities included:
In Language Arts:
* Over the last couple of weeks we have focused on the letters M and S.
We will continue with the letter S into next week. Our sight words have been AND, THE, THIS, IS.
*Poem: Song of the Seagull - focuses on the letter S and sight words THIS and IS.
With our poem displayed on the interactive white board, children highlighted sight words and words that begin with the letter S.
*Practice with the formation of the letter S - clay, stamp and see screens, and iPads - application WET, DRY, TRY.
*BLM - worksheets for practice with letter sounds.
*Listening for the letter in the beginning and end of words.
*Recognizing the letters M and S in print.
*We began Handwriting Without Tears with activities that introduced terms such as BIG LINE, LITTLE LINE, BIG CURVE, LITTLE CURVE through
our wooden pieces. Children sorted and named wooden pieces. We used these pieces to build "Mat Man" which is a figure designed to teach body awareness and reinforce wooden piece terms. We will refer to these terms throughout the year as we work with letter formation. For example, the capital B is formed with a "big line, frog jump to the top, little curve, little curve. I hope the handwriting information that went home has been helpful.
*We have also focused on correct letter formation of our letter of the week as well as reviewing all letters.
* Letter M is a "frog jump" letter.
* Lowercase m is a "dive down" letter. These are prompts we give the children to form the letter correctly.
* Formation of the numbers 1-4.
*Introduced Lexia Core 5 - Reading Program - using laptops
*Handwriting Without Tears app. Wet, Dry, Try - using iPads
Counting Days of the week - regrouping to set of ten
