* Children began preparing for their FA Helper Presentation which will take
place at All-School Meeting on Wednesday, January 25, 2017. We hope you can make it to see the work the children did on their FA Helper interview.
* Winter weather is upon us. Please send your child with a hat, gloves/mittens, coat, boots, and snowpants when possible. We will go outside unless it is extreme winter weather. Thank you for your effort.
Returning to class together for the first time in 2017 and after break, gave us the opportunity to share some special memories and experiences during winter break. Children shared with each other and did some writing about their break. To organize their thoughts and allow for the most detailed and well-thought out writing, they started with a brainstorming sheet. Then, they used those ideas to transfer it to their Writer's Notebook. We are working towards including more details and not assuming the reader knows specific details such as Who, what, when, where, why, and how.
Reflecting - We also spent some time discussing reflections and why we do them. Children gave wonderful reasons and understanding for the importance of self-reflecting. Ideas included we can see how much we have learned/grown. We can learn from our reflections. We can set new goals.
Children enjoyed playing the game SPIN and MULTIPLY. This games provides practice using fingers to mark the amount of groups as one skip counts to find the answer (product) obtained by multiplying groups of 5 items.
In Math, we have been working on multiplication. Children started multiplying by twos and using skip counting and their fingers to mulitply groups of two. We discussed that the multiplication sentence - 6X2= can be solved by counting skips groups of two on our fingers - 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. We used this method as well as dot paper to figure out multiplication problems with 2s, then 5s, and finally 10s.
Topics and Vocabulary:
Mulitplying 2 using skip counting and dot paper
Multiplying 5 using skip counting and dot paper
Multiplying 10 using skip counting and dot paper
Using known mulitiplication facts to find new mulitiplication facts
Identifying related multiplication facts: 5x4 =20 and 4x5=20
Solving multiplication word problems
Vocabulary: multiplication sentence, related multiplication facts, group and item. You might consider asking your child to share their understanding of these words.
Shared Reading - We used our Making Meaning program and enjoyed a story about Henry Ford called Eat My Dust by Monica Kulling. We practiced word study, making predictions, summarizing, and discussed the book with a partner.
Mrs. Barker visited and read to the class.
GREAT JOB, to our Book Buzzers!
