Happy New Year!
We started our week together sharing news about our break. Children wrote about their family time, experiences, and even traveling in their weekend news journals.
Letter of the week is G
* Children worked on formation of G and g. We have focused on the placement on the line as well as formation.
Uppercase G is an uppercase magic c letter. Lowercase g is a magic c dive down letter.
*Listening for /g/ at the beginning, middle, and ending of words.
*Focused on the hard g sound as in goat but introduced the soft g sound as in giraffe. G is often soft when followed by e, i, or y.
*identified g in print
*Our poem Gus has a Goldfish focused on sight words: WITH and TO and the letter G.
*Other sight words we worked with: WENT and MY.
*New BIG book To Town a story about people traveling to town in creative ways: by bulldozer, fire engine, vintage car, helicopter, motorbike, or pogostick.
Children wrote in their journals about a fun way that they would travel to town.
" I will go to town on my -------------, ---------------, -----------------.
Example: I will go to town on my old, blue, bike.
*Kid Pix -art studio - children draw something that begins with the letter G and type the following sentence: "G is for ------."
*Wet, Dry, Try on iPads to practice with letter formation
*Interactive White board - practice identifying words and the letters in the poem of the week.
*Children have been working with numbers up to 20
*reviewing fewer than and more than
*Counting on from a certain number - 14 is 10 and 4 more
*Using ten frames to represent and count numbers
A ten frame is a graph with ten spaces. Children fill the spaces with chips in the frame in a specific order to recognize the amount of items at a glance. When the ten frame is full the children recognize quickly that there is 10. As we have worked with numbers above 10 and incorporated 2 ten frames, children are able to recognize that a full ten frame and a second ten frame with 4 is fourteen. They can recognize that a full ten frame represents 10 and can count on to 14 with the 4 chips in the second ten frame are able to count on from 10 saying 10, 11, 12, 13, 14. They also make the connection that 14 is 10 and 4 more. Check the photos page out for more photos of these activities.
Thank you to Mrs. Hottel for her yoga and mindfulness activities. Thank you to our guest reader, Mrs. Barker, and to Mrs. Foley-Marsello for visiting us with her mystery box for the letter G.
We also enjoyed a "guessing" greeting this week both as one class and both classes combined. The children had a great time guessing who was greeting them with disguised voices.
Be sure to check out the dates and photos pages. I hope you enjoyed.
